Decisions, Decisions…

Choosing artwork for your home can be a difficult decision. You have to choose something that matches your personality, yet is cohesive with your decor. Even more than that, I would argue that the most crucial decision is which size to get. You would hate to invest in artwork that is too large and consumes your space. Likewise, choosing a piece that is too small can look awkward and lonely on your wall. The simplest way to figure out what size you need is to frame it out on your wall. Grab some blue painters tape or wrapping paper and mark out your ideal size. Measure that, then pick the artwork that is closest to the dimensions. Below, you will find tips and tricks for filling certain spaces in your home! Also, I share sizes that typically work for common areas! Don’t hesitate to reach out to me at caseylangteauart@gmail.com if you’re still unsure what size to get!

Above a fireplace or furniture piece:

40”x30” “Carnival Queen

40”x30” “Carnival Queen

  • You want the width of the artwork to be 65-85 percent of the furniture’s total width

  • At least 8 to 10 inches above furniture.

  • When choosing art for over a fireplace, it’s ideal for the art to be the same width as the opening of the fireplace

Above your bed:

30x40 “Beats Have Me Buzzin’”

30x40 “Beats Have Me Buzzin’”

  • Again, you want the width of the artwork to be 65-85 percent of the bed’s total width and at least 8-10 inches above the headboard.

  • Canvases sized from 40”x30” to 48”x36” work well for Queen and King beds

  • Or choose two smaller paintings like 2 30”x24”

  • If your headboard is tall, I recommend hanging artwork above the nightstands instead- try 2 24”x48”

Filling a large wall:

3 24x36 “Shucks I’m in Love” Canvases

3 24x36 “Shucks I’m in Love” Canvases

  • When working with a large empty wall, you want to have 3/8th the width of the painting on either side of the painting.  To calculate your ideal width, simply multiply the length of your wall by 0.57.

  • Consider using a Triptych or Diptych piece for trying to fill wide spaces. Make sure to leave 1.5 inches in between the pieces.

  • Artwork should rest 58 inch from the floor to the middle of the piece or the center should be at eye level

  • If you’re putting artwork on your sofa wall, choose a canvas that is two-thirds the length of your sofa

  • You can split up a large wall by adding floating shelves and other decorative items- just make sure it is balanced/ somewhat symmetrical

  • If you would like multiple paintings/photographs, hang a gallery wall - try laying it out on the ground before you hang it to make sure you like it

In the bathroom:

32”x48” Expensive Taste Reworked Canvas (Home by Danos Development)

32”x48” Expensive Taste Reworked Canvas (Home by Danos Development)

  • Brighten up and add personality to your bathroom by choosing a fun theme for the artwork

  • If the bathroom gets a lot of moisture, choose framed artwork

  • Other artwork will be safe if there is ventilation, but I would recommend canvas prints vs originals

  • Powder bathrooms can use artwork sized from 11”x14” to 20”x20”

  • Create a statement piece above your master bathroom’s tub by hanging a 30”x30”to 36”x60”
